CLIONIAN SOCIETY

In the early years Clubs and Societies were a main way people could get involved in their communities. Keep in mind communication was not like it is today, people either read information or gathered together to promote progress of many different types.

The Vernon Clionian Society was named by local High School girls in honor of Clio, the Greek Muse of History, it was officially organized with its own constitution by 1858. A dated copy of their constitution was discovered when the first high school building in Vernon was torn down in 1920. In the 1830's through the 1850's Greek architecture and literature were big in America and organizations were often given Greek names.

According to the Clionian Society's constitution, the purpose of the group was established as, "The object of the club is for the moral, social, educational and civic upbuilding of our town and community and a united effort to fulfill all duties as laid down in our year book."

Charter Members of the Clionian Society
I checked the 1850 census for the women listed below and was surprised at how young some of them would have been in 1858 when the Clionian Society began. Ages of some in about 1858 are listed, which shows involvement by High School age girls.
